Erecting a Garage

This section will give you a general overview of what to expect for the assembly of a wood or metal garage. The detailed information, however, will be supplied by the manufacturer you are using. The main point is that the assembly of any garage is safe and relatively easy to do and it shouldn’t be a complicated process. You shouldn’t feel overly challenged if you have limited construction experience either. If you intend to assemble the building yourself, or with the assistance of a contractor, some specifics that you need to know are listed below.

Amount of Time Required for Assembly

Assembly times differ for wood and metal garages depending on the size of the structure and the accessories that are chosen. Some of the less complicated sizes can be erected in a minimum of a day, and it may take a week to put up larger structures. There is usually a “guesstimated” timeline available from the manufacturer for both the size and design style selected. Pre-cut versus pre-assembled style of either wood or steel garages will increase the amount of time required to complete the project.

Doing It Yourself

It’s not that hard to assemble the garage if either a pre-cut or pre-assembled style of garage is selected. All components are produced and tailored to the exact specifications in the plan, so modifications by you are minimized. Most designs will come with detailed instructions, but the builder should also have a customer service contact available if any questions arise during construction. Each garage project is different and there’s no one way to do things. With the proper manufacturer’s help, a “do-it-yourself” project is not that complicated to finish.

What the Company Should Be Able to Provide

Whether you buy a metal, steel or wooden garage the company that you buy it from should, at a minimum, be able to supply the following information:

Complete assembly instructions
Optional assembly videos
Bill of ladings with a specific component checklist
A suggested tools list
Online customer service to assist with any questions
Assembly suggestions to minimize time and money expenditures
Customer service 800 number
Suggestions on local contractors that may help, if required

Hiring an Erector or Contractor

A number of people select to hire either an erector or contractor for their garage project. The manufacturer you choose should be able to help you locate a qualified builder in your area. We have a page on this website totally devoted to that topic.
