Pre-Cut and Pre-Assembled Garages

The information provided in this article is a general synopsis on how to assemble your wood or metal garage. It’s not a specific guide, as no two structures are alike; however, whatever company you are using to manufacture your garage must forward the assembly instructions to you before the building is shipped.  This is so that you may have the ability to review the information before any construction commences. Most garage manufacturers have modified the assembly of their pre-fabricated buildings so that it is a relatively simple operation.

A garage will normally arrive either pre-cut or pre-assembled. All parts that are needed will arrive in one shipment. Accessories such as doors, windows and vents may arrive at different times from different locations.

The following items are the basics that are required for any structure:

You need to have detailed instructions provided that is easy to read and follow. It should take you on a step-by-step format through the entire building process.

Inquire about construction videos with the manufacturer because many companies can provide them.

Doors are included in many pre-assembled accessories.

All building components should be shipped in one delivery.

All hardware should be included in the package, including screws and nails.

Additional Things You Should Know

Shingles aren’t normally shipped with any wood garage applications because there are a vast amount of style preferences. Pre-engineered steel garages, however, will have all components for the roofing included. Some consumers prefer to select their own shingles for their wooden garage from their local hardware supply store.  A stapling gun will be necessary if cedar shingles are selected.

Roof assembly on metal garages is quick, as all component parts are pre-cut and pre-welded to fit exact specifications, however certain steps must be taken with wood garages. Some roof pieces may not be pre-cut at the factory and roof panels are usually cut on site to design requirements.

Metal and Wood Garage Formats

Most wood garages will arrive at the project site in pre-cut form. This type of format is very popular with those wanting to construct the building themselves. The garage has been designed with most materials pre-cut along with the doors and windows already pre-built. These types of structures require more assembly time, but they are commonly less expensive than pre-assembled metal garages.

These pre-cut garages will generally include:

Detailed, easy-to-read instructions
Assembly videos
All framing and siding material that is pre-cut
All necessary hardware such as nails, screws and door handles
Floor
Pre-assembled doors, windows and other accessories

Metal or steel and some wood garages are typically pre-assembled. Pre-assembly is popular with consumers who need their garage erected quickly. All component parts come pre-assembled and go up rather quickly once construction begins. Some of the smaller metal garages can be assembled by two people in a matter of days. Larger garages will require a work crew a little longer for completion.

Pre-assembled garage buildings will generally include:

Detailed, easy to read instructions
Assembly videos
Pre-assembled walls, trusses, and in some cases contain floors
Pre-assembled doors, windows and other accessories in most cases
All necessary hardware such as nails, screws and door handles

Pre-Assembly Tips

Assembly is still required for some materials. The term “pre-assembled” means that the major components such as walls and trusses are built and framed. The entire assembly still needs to be put together though. Additional purchasing of sheathing and trim may be required and there may be rafters or trusses in the roof. If it’s a metal building, the trusses will be pre-assembled. If rafters are employed, they will be pre-cut in order to fit together during assembly.  Windows and doors are usually pre-framed allowing them to be placed readily in the building.
